The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is building a significant reconfiguration of the Route 29 corridor in north Charlottesville (Albemarle County) to make transportation more efficient through this densely built part of the city. The work will include significant additions to the travel lanes and a large underpass bridge at the Rio Road intersection valued at approximately $40 million. A stakeholder Oversight Committee was formed to guide the aesthetic requirements of the work and KWLS was hired to provide designs for the project that would insure that it is pedestrian-friendly, aesthetically compelling and forms an entrance and gateway to the City that has evokes a sense of place. The VDOT is now incorporating the designs to the extent feasible in the current constructions documents. KWLS is in contract with the Southern Environmental Law Center as members of the Oversight Committee.
