JAMES MADISON university residence hall

Harrisonburg, Virginia

The landscape architecture plan for the new dormitory at James Madison University focuses on creating durable and flexible spaces for student activities while maintaining the campus's identity and connection to nature. The site, located on the current Ikenberry Hall dormitory grounds, features a mix of open lawns, scattered trees, and foundation plantings, with significant slopes and existing vegetation. The design includes welcoming sidewalks, plazas, and a large interior courtyard for outdoor activities, emphasizing sustainability through native plantings, stormwater mitigation, and local materials. The hardscape elements use standard university materials, and the plantings are chosen for their durability, seasonal color, and educational value. Overall, the plan aims to enhance outdoor connectivity, support alternative transportation, and protect the environment.
