Lancaster county high school and middle school
Lancaster County, Virginia
The landscape plan for the new, combined Middle and High School Building in Lancaster County, Virginia emphasizes sustainability, wildlife habitat, and natural drainage patterns while providing the setting for educational and community experiences into the coming century. The site uses vegetated swales and an existing agricultural pond to manage stormwater, reducing reliance on channelized stormwater systems and promoting natural hydrology. Located on a defunct golf course, large areas of existing lawn will be converted to native, flowering meadows to enhance biodiversity and reduce maintenance costs. The design includes organic, serpentine vegetated corridors that provide stormwater drainage and wildlife habitat, integrating green infrastructure close to the school. Additionally, the school is envisioned as a new community center for the county, offering spaces for large events, outdoor activities, and educational opportunities related to the environment.
