LYNCHBURG RIVERFRONT IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
Lynchburg, Virginia
The focus of the Lynchburg Riverfront Implementation Master Plan was the sustainable revitalization of the Historic Downtown Riverfront and nearby urban fabric, trails and circulation. Included in the plan are an 8 acre Riverfront Park and the renewal of nearby urban streets with multiple spaces for recreation, interpretive facilities, and gathering. While at NBWLA, Kennon Williams was the Senior Project Manager and Designer leading the design team on this project. When Kennon left NBW and started KWLS, the City asked him to continue working on the Riverfront Downtown and the Lower Bluff Walk to renew the waterfront district.
The Master Plan was endorsed by City Council in 2006 and detailed design of the Riverfront area began shortly thereafter. The redevelopment of the Riverfront is a multiyear effort that was distributed over a series of design projects. One of the largest of those projects, the Lower Bluffwalk, contains a series of public spaces and pedestrian ways that connect the Lynchburg Downtown to the Riverfront. As part of that effort, KWLS designed infrastructural projects including rain gardens, biofilters, pedestrian bridges, pergolas, grand stair cases, and the redevelopment of several main streets. In all of this work the unique history of the City and the environmental context of the riverfront are celebrated and protected.
