MARK RYLANDER, AIA, LEED AP
Mark Rylander is an architect and manager with strong experience in the design and development of aspirational and complex projects. His professional focus on sustainable design is grounded in multidisciplinary team leadership. All of his work seeks principles from nature as the basis of planning and design. Currently at KWLS Mark is managing several complex, large-scale land use projects. Mark has had recent experience in hotel design and development management.
As a Director with William McDonough + Partners (WM+P) for over fifteen years, Mark led projects for clients such as Nike, The Woods Hole Research Center, and Hines. Prior to WM+P, he worked for award-winning design firms New York City, where he gained expertise in technical design, engineering integration, and construction. Mark has participated in several green technology ventures in New York and Washington DC. He is actively engaged in the creation of urban design codes and guidelines that benefit both private and public interests.
Mark has become a trusted adviser, teacher, and recognized authority on sustainability and urbanism. He served as 2004 chair of the AIA Committee on the Environment, and edited the Sustainable Design Chapter for the 11th edition of Architectural Graphic Standards. Mark speaks and writes about design, technology, and culture, and has served on the faculty at the University of Virginia.
