NEW COLLEGE

Sarasota, Florida

In the wake of an ongoing re-organization, New College, the honors college of the Florida state university system, commissioned this new master plan for the consolidation and expansion of their existing campus. Richard Price of KWLS managed the team effort led by Moule & Polyzoides Architects.

The plan focuses on strategies for developing three distinct areas: an ecologically sensitive bayfront historic area, a campus core bridging a major thoroughfare, and an adjacent mixed-use village center.

The plan calls for a pedestrian-oriented campus organized around a series of courtyards and quadrangles.  The plan includes stringent guidelines for green building and a goal to become carbon neutral, energy independent and a net exporter of power over the next 20 years.

Of special concern was the regeneration of the historic landscape and the design of an ecologically-sensitive storm water management system to protect the sensitive shorefront.
