PARK 2020

Haarlemermeer, Netherlands

While at NBW, Kennon Williams led the landscape design team and did the majority of the landscape architectural and site sustainability design for the Park 20/20 Master Plan. In 2010 the Master Plan received a National ASLA Honor Award for Analysis and Planning.

The park is a mixed–use, transit-oriented business and retail center that aspires to be a model for sustainable design in the Netherlands and Europe. It would be the first large scale project to fully utilize the “Cradle to Cradle” protocols for material specifications and architectural and landscape design. It is to be highly energy efficient, carbon neutral, and possibly an energy exporter. The site is adjacent to the Hoofddorp transit stop and within walking and biking distance from the town center.

Though it is to match the high urban density of the adjacent city fabric, the majority of the roofs and horizontal surfaces will be green or outfitted with solar panels. Water will be managed for maximum efficiency and environmental responsibility: black and gray water are to be treated on site and reused for irrigation. Stormwater will be stored for irrigation or released into a constructed wetland and pond planted with native plants. Plantings will create habitat for native fauna and migrating song birds as well as pollinating insects. Numerous roof gardens, verdant plazas, and lush park spaces provide visitors and employees with access to good views and green space.
